Here are some of the highlights of Caterpillar's strict remanufacturing process for cylinder heads and valves:
- Each cylinder head is disassembled, cleaned to meet rigid requirements, and 100% inspected. Internal coolant passages vital to proper water circulation are checked for casting debris, ensuring heat is properly dissipated to avoid cracking.
- Castings are 100% checked for cracks, erosion, or other damage that could cause failure if left undetected.
- The combustion deck is resurfaced to ensure a tight seal between the cylinder head and engine block to help prevent combustion gas and coolant leaks.
- Valve springs are tested to ensure that the load limits meet Caterpillar specifications.
- All exhaust valves and other critical wear and sealing components are replaced with new Caterpillar parts—as are other parts, including head castings, which can’t be remanufactured to demanding Caterpillar specifications.
- All Reman cylinder heads are pressure-tested for leaks before they leave the factory.
